This was our second stay in Grenada (NA-024) after my DXpedition in 1996 on occasion of my 50th birthday and our first visit to
Carriacou Island (NA-149). We smelled immediately that we were on the “Isle of Spice” when we left our plane. We felt like entering a giant spice shop in an Oriental Bazar.
The air is filled with the smell of “One thousand and one nights”.
Grenada is a mountainous volcanic island of about 350 square kilometers size with a lush green vegetation. The coastline changes from
beautiful beaches to breathtaking rough and wild cliffs. There are serveral waterfalls and a few lakes spread all over the island. The center of the island is covered with rainforest and nutmeg plantations.
Grenada is the second biggest exporter of nutmeg in the world. But the last hurricanes hit the island seriously. Most of the big trees of the rainforest went down in the storms and there are only a few nutmeg trees left
In Grenada live about 95.000 people. The capital city St. George’s is one of the most picturesque cities in the Caribbean. There is a small tourism zone close to St. George’s in Grand Anse and Lance aux Epines but the
rest of the island remains (still) unspoiled and keeps its Caribbean charme far away from mass tourism.
